I've been rambling off rapidfire the spiel of my travel plans to friends and family more and more often recently: “I'm going to Southeast India for three and a half months to study sustainability in an ecovillage called Auroville for my last semester

I'm standing in my parents driveway, a foot deep in snow with a mango in my hand and the juices running down my face and wrist. There's something inherently wrong with this. Mangos don't grow here in Massachusetts, especially not during winter. In two days, I'm flying to where they do grow, where I can eat their tropical flesh and not feel that pang of cognitive dissonance of eating cross-globally. I like to this this is irregular behavior for me that comes out when I fall back into the comfort and convenience of living with my parents in my suburban hometown, Bedford.

Two days, and I'll be leaving for this journey that I've been anticipating for a year. I've been rambling off rapidfire the spiel of my travel plans to friends and family more and more often recently: “I'm going to Southeast India for three and a half months to study sustainability in an ecovillage called Auroville for my last semester of college.” Easy enough to say, but I still have no idea what it's really going to entail. I keep my fingers crossed that they don't ask too many questions, because I'm asking the same ones myself. Who are you going with? What are you going to learn? What is an ecovillage, and what does Auroville do that makes it qualify as one? Why are you going?

Why am I going? I can't really answer that, other than to say that it just feels like the right thing to do. I've found India intriguing for a long while, but there are plenty of other places I've found enticing, too. Perhaps the reason I'm going will unfold in time, either while I'm there or afterwards. Either way, I'm excited, nervous and open to whatever it is that lies ahead.
